Happy Birthday, Papa

FLASH FRIDAY CHALLENGE: 99 WORDS
PHOTO PROMPT © JEAN L. HAYS

The summer sun is unforgiving as Mary’s rusty buggy stops at the Trading Post. Her horse shakes his sweat soaked mane and snorts loudly. Mary tosses him an apple and he relishes in its sweetness.

Today is her father’s birthday.  Every year she comes here to search the shelves for a gift.

She hands her crumbled money and a metal compass to the cashier. He’s watched Mary grow since she was two. He smiles and says “Tell your father happy birthday”.

She grins and heads back down the road to the old cemetery to give her father his gift.

    That was sweet indeed.
As the rest of the story is in the present tense, maybe change your was to is?

Yes! I have a bad habit of switching back and forth throughout my story. It was originally in past tense. Thank you for the correction.

You are most welcome. We’re here to help and encourage each other! I’ve been guilty of it too and just wanted to give you a little heads up! I like that it is in the present tense!
